The Instituto Social y Político de la Mujer was created by a group of women -with work experiences in different social, academic and political areas-, with the purpose of contributing to improve changes in women's condition, modifying the society's behavior at large. Many of us began to work together since about 1986, but we legally founded it as a non-profit association since 1993.

Our goals are:

    • Promote women's human rights and human rights with gender perspective. Influence public opinion such that it favors social changes that would improve women's condition. Bring to light the problems that affect women in their private lives and propose equity policies to make women and men's everyday life better. Identify and work to remove the factors that impede women's participation in politics. Train women who belong to different areas and activities (academia, labor unions, business, professional fields) in the empowerment of women and how to strengthen existing female leadership. Encourage political leaders to acknowledge the discriminating practices that prevent women from having the possibility to reach positions of power. Contribute to redefining the development, execution and evaluation of public policies such that they take into account their impact on women and include their point of view. Contribute to the efforts of expanding equal opportunity policies and affirmative action in the workplace.
    • Facilitate women's increasing participation in community development; create further visibility in order that their contributions in this area are acknowledged.
